Your website not in the top? And it's not SEO: 3 technical errors you're ignoring
Introduction: When SEO is Not the Main Enemy
You invested money in SEO, optimized content, bought links — but your site is still not in Google? Perhaps the issue is not search engine optimization at all. There are technical problems that simply prevent robots from seeing your pages. And 90% of website owners ignore them.
A site can be perfect from an SEO standpoint, but if Google doesn't index it — you're invisible. Period.
🏴 Indexing: The Main Trap
The first technical reason is incorrect indexing settings. Google simply doesn't know your site exists, or forbids itself from showing it.
- 🚫 noindex in meta tags — accidentally set on all pages via a plugin.
- 🤖 robots.txt blocks entire sections (e.g., categories or images).
- 🕸️ Broken XML sitemaps — the robot cannot find new pages.
🧱 Structure: Chaos That Confuses Robots
Even if the site is indexed, its structure hinders ranking. Google loves logic and hierarchy. And users love speed.
- 🔗 Content duplicates — the same pages accessible via different URLs (with and without www, with trackers).
- 🗂️ Depth > 3 clicks — important pages are "buried" in menu sub-items.
- 📄 Broken internal links — the robot hits a 404 dead end and leaves.
Every page should be 2-3 clicks from the homepage. If not — your site loses the race for speed.
⚡ Speed and Core Web Vitals: The Invisible Filter
Google officially declared Core Web Vitals a ranking factor. But many still ignore LCP, FID, and CLS. Poor speed is not just about UX, it's about rankings.
- 🐌 LCP > 2.5 seconds — users leave, robots lower the ranking.
- 👆 FID > 100 ms — the site doesn't respond to clicks, Google considers it unfriendly.
- 📐 CLS > 0.1 — elements jump during loading, disrupting visual stability.
🛑 Errors That Kill Visibility
Sometimes the cause is not SEO but plain bugs. Here's what to check first:
- ❌ 5xx codes — server errors when the robot makes a request (common on overloaded hosting).
- 🔄 Infinite redirects — chains of 301s that the robot cannot traverse.
- 🧩 JavaScript content that doesn't render — Googlebot sees an empty page, even though it looks fine in a browser.
Google does not see 'beautiful' content if it's hidden behind complex JS. If your site is on React or Angular — make sure server-side rendering is enabled.
What to do?
Make it a rule: once a month, check the technical health of your site via Google Search Console, PageSpeed Insights, and Screaming Frog. Fix indexing, speed up loading, repair broken links — and you'll see traffic climb without writing a single new article.
Remember: SEO is fuel, but without a working engine (technical foundation) you won't get anywhere. Start with the tech — and Google will notice you.
